Introduction
When I first started hiking in Norway, I found it very difficult to find good useful books relevant to hiking. The books I found then were typically 'Rough Guide' and 'Lonely Planet' books which were of little use or interest to hikers. Later on, I found in the local library in Denmark a few good books such as 'Jotunheimen fra Hytte til Hytte'. I was impressed by their photographic coverage. Since then I've found more books and I very much hope the list and reviews below will be useful to those hiking to Norway.
I've often displayed advertised prices in Danish Kroner (DKr) there is just over 10 DKr to £1. The prices quoted in DKr are from the 1999 Nordisk Korthandel catalogue. I would very much appreciate help in locating retail outlets in the UK that sell many of these books and if you know of any books that aren't listed then please tell me about them.
Advice
A lot of the books are extremely expensive compared with Scottish guidebooks. A book the size of say 'Wild Walks' by Ken Wilson and Richard Gilbert would cost in excess of £50! Many other books are that kind of price. I've always borrow the book 'Jotunheimen fra Hytte til Hytte' from the local library. I'd recommend that you do something similar. Even go to a local library in Norway to do some browsing and planning. A good way of finding out about further books is to become a DNT member and look for book adverts in their magazine 'Fjell og Vidde'
Many of the reviews I've done just involve a quick read through at a bookshop to assess photographic content and see what kind of content the book has as well as see how much content there is.
