Mountain Hiking in Norway

This is a general guide book that is suitable for those wanting suggested tours for trail walking in Norway. It provides basic information on each area covered regarding geology, relief, history and wildlife. All DNT and private huts are listed for each area and it also gives instructions on how to get to the start of each suggested tour.
The book concentrates chiefly on the mountains south of Trondheim with less information on the ranges in the north. General information on Norway and hiking in general is also covered. There aren't many photographs, 1 - 3 pictures being typical for each area described so it's not the most illustrative book.
Presentation isn't the best either - each area described doesn't start on a new page - they start on a new column which makes searching for info more difficult. Overall it's a reasonable book for those who have never seen Norway before and just want a 'spoon fed' walking tour. The book should be easy to find in many good bookshops in the UK. The cost when I bought it 3 years ago was ~£13.00. It's advertised in Nordisk Korthandel (in Denmark) as being 178 DKr.

This guide book very much has the same format as the book reviewed above. It is pocket sized, about the same size as a Wainwright regional guide to the lake district.
As well as showing maps, it shows an elevation cross section of each suggested walk and indicates how stenuous each walk is along with a guide to steepness of each walk. The features of each walking day are also summarised. It has fewer photographs than the previous book but the presentation is much less messy and essential information such as what maps to bring is made much clearer. It does not however, list all the DNT and other trail huts for each recommended area.
Again this book should also be relatively easy to find in the good bookshops in the UK. Advertised price in Nordisk Korthandel (in Denmark) is 205 DKr

This guidebook covers basic descriptions of all the DNT paths in Norway. Each path has a reference number on a map for each area. All the DNT huts are listed along with other accommodation placed on their paths. This book is also pocket sized but has more information than the previously mentioned books. Features of each area are described. These features may be geographical, historical, botanical or cultural.
There is only one photograph for each area so it's not the most illustrated book. Presentation is reasonably clear. The Norwegian version of this book is free to those who subscribe membership to the DNT. The English version of this book is said to cost ~£30.
It isn't widely available in the UK. There is an outlet in Ambleside (Mountain and Wildlife ventures (I think)) that deals in Norwegian Holidays where DNT membership can be obtained. You could also try the Norwegian Tourist office in London otherwise try the DNT website.

Wow! What a big book! I picked this book up in the local Danish library. The book size is much much thicker than the thickest Munro Bagging guide book available. This 1980 edition covers most areas of hiking and mountaineering interest quite well. It's not really a guidebook. It just provides a general description of each area to a reasonable degree of interest. You can't really use it for planning. It's chief merit is the fact that it gives you a reasonable number of photos of each area to give you a realistic impression of what each mountain area provides as far as mountains are concerned. The book also covers mountain geology, history and art. There are also sections covering wildlife, botany and mountain skills. Best of all it has an A - Z (or A to Å) of all significant mountain peaks with a small description of each.
The only criticism of this book is the photographic quality. Many pictures are quite grainy and not very sharp. This is probably due to the film and printing technology of the day (in 1980) but later editions of this book will probably have better picture quality. Yes this book is well worth getting hold of. I don't unfortunately know where you can obtain it (except my local library) and I imagine it's a very expensive book to buy if you can get it!
